Before you bring it in
Getting your boat ready.
Salt water is hard on boats and trailers. A little care before storage goes a long way.
- Flush the motor with fresh water after your last run.
- Rinse off the salt from the hull, trailer, brakes and bearings before you arrive. Vehicle washing isn’t permitted onsite.
- Treat the fuel. For longer stays, follow the engine maker’s advice on fuel stabiliser and fogging.
- Let rainwater out. Pull the bung and raise the bow slightly so rain can drain, unless your boat’s manual says otherwise. Leave yourself a reminder to put the bung back in.
- Look after the battery. Disconnect it, or take it home to keep it charged.
- Take valuables home, including electronics, rods and safety gear.
- Cover it. A well-fitted, breathable cover keeps out sun, rain and falling leaves.
- Check the trailer. Tyres, bearings, lights and registration. A coupling lock and wheel clamp make it harder to move.
- Check your insurance covers the boat while it’s stored away from home.
